Location

The ancient seaside town of Ismara became a colony of the Chian colonists in the 7th century B.C. In the town of Maron, public buildings, a harbour, a market, a theatre were built. Impressive are the ruins of a 3rd century BC residence and especially the excellent mosaic flooring on the left side of the road to the port. In the port of Agios Charalambos with the modern breakwater, which protects the fishing boats, parts of the Byzantine wall, the ancient breakwater and a monumental propylon of the Roman era of 124 AD are clearly visible. The jewel of Maronia is the ancient theatre, the restoration and completion of which is in progress. To the west of the ancient theatre is the sanctuary of Dionysus, from which a clay mask of the god of the 4th th century BC originates. Maroneia maintained its prosperity during the Byzantine period. An episcopal church of the 8th century AD has been excavated from this period and the foundations and part of a square tower of the Byzantine fortification have been preserved. The archaeological findings in the area of 'Synaxis' are also important. On the ruins of an early Christian basilica of the 6th century AD, the remains of a monastery of the 9th century AD were found. Maroneia: a city-state with multi-faceted activity that evolved into a castle. A city with continuous life in the same place and with the same name accepted by all conquerors.
